2 Minute Drill: Bruins are like their ice surface — frozen in place
This is sportscenter 5 2 minute drills, there’s a fine line between stability and stubbornness. The Bruins are on the wrong side of that line after yet another early playoff exits. It’s been 10 years since the Bruins lifted the Stanley cup. It looks like they’re admirable core is going to be a one timer when it comes to championships to change that, the Bruins have to embrace some major changes. How many times are the Bruins going to try the same thing over and over without success, relying on Tuukka rask Annette believing that they have young players capable of complementing Patrice Bergeron, brad, marchand and David Krejci trusting GM Don Sweeney to put the pieces together. The Bruins are like their ice surface frozen in place. This playoff run felt like the last call for a cup and a wake up call. It’s time for a big turnover that can help this team. This isn’t the Supreme Court, there are no lifetime appointments. Look to Carrusca’s, the Bruins all time winningest goalie but he simply can’t make it to the Stanley cup winner circle, always breaking down or misfiring before that He’s 34 and set for surgery to repair torn labrum. It’s time to hand the keys to the net to Jeremy. Sweatman injuries have taken their toll on defenseman Kevin Miller, he’s the Kemba Walker of the Bruins. The most important ability is availability. Miller doesn’t have it young, jake DeBrusk while he looks ticketed for the dustbin of promising Bruins prospects gone sideways. But the biggest change has to start at the top. Sweeney did a masterful job at the trade deadline, patching holes with taylor Hall and mike Riley but it’s his fault, those holes were there to begin with and the Bruins still have too many of them. Sweeney has been in the organization since 2006. He’s been the GM since 2015 only once during his GM tenure has the team made it past the second round. That was 2019 when a rash of upsets rolled out the red carpet to the cup final. It’s time for a fresh set of eyes and a fresh approach. Watching Matthew Barzel skate circles around the Bruins was another reminder of how badly Sweeney botched the 2015 draft when he had three consecutive first round picks. That draft remains one of the biggest reasons. This core only has one cup to its name. Look breaking up is hard to do, but it’s time for the Bruins to break it up because staying trapped in the neutral zone isn’t an option. That’s the two minute drill. Yeah, Thank you.
