UGA golf Alum Harris English wins in dramatic fashion

The Georgia golf program had a fantastic showing at the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship this past week.

11 Bulldogs took the course at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. After three rounds, former Georgia standout Bubba Watson held a share of the lead and seven other UGA products were in the top 30, including Kevin Kisner, Russel Henley and Harris English, who were all in the top-five headed into Sunday’s final round.

Watson held the lead for most of the afternoon before losing it to Harris English after a bogey on hole No. 14. English finished at 7-under 65 with the help of a huge birdie on No. 18 and headed to the clubhouse as the leader at 13-under.

UGA basketball hire has connection to ESPN anchor, football assistant

Georgia officially announced the hire of a new assistant basketball coach on Thursday, prompting two fellow New Orleans natives to go on social media to celebrate Wade Mason’s move.

ESPN SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett and Georgia wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton took to Twitter to recognize Mason, who spent the past five seasons on the Stephen F. Austin staff.

“Proud of you, man!” Verrett wrote.

“Purple Knights in the building! Welcome brother @wmason1409!!! #GoDawgs,” Hankton said.

Mason played on St. Augustine High’s 1995 USA Today national championship basketball team. Verrett and Hankton also graduated from St. Augustine.

Mason will be paid a $260,000 base salary annually effective last Friday, according to an open records request. Chad Dollar, who was making $300,000 a year, left last month for a similar job at Cincinnati.
