Aaron Rodgers closing in on reworked contract with Green Bay Packers as part of 2021 return

One of the biggest mysteries of the NFL offseason just gained a little bit of clarity.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is close to an agreement with the Green Bay Packers on a reworked contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports’ Mike Jones, seemingly bringing at least a temporary end to the months-long stalemate between the reigning NFL MVP and the franchise he has been with for 16 seasons. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been finalized.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the development.

Under terms of the agreement, according to ESPN, the final year of Rodgers’ existing contract would be voided, leaving only two remaining. Green Bay would not be allowed to place the franchise or transition tag on Rodgers, and the team would agree to review the contract at the end of the season, per ESPN.

Aaron Rodgers declined Packers’ contract extension offer

GREEN BAY – In an attempt to mend their relationship with Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers offered a contract extension this offseason that would have tied the quarterback to the team for the next five seasons, multiple people with knowledge of the discussions confirmed to the USA TODAY Network. The people spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.

It was believed the Packers’ initial hesitancy to make any meaningful alterations to Rodgers’ contract after the season only exacerbated the quarterback’s frustrations.

But the Packers regrouped to offer an extension that would expire after Rodgers’ age-42 season, multiple people familiar with

Saturday morning on ESPN’s SportsCenter, senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler shared an update regarding whether or not Rodgers’ will show up when the Packers kick things off.

“Asking around the league and some people who talked to coaches and people in the Green Bay building, there’s no uniform feeling as to whether Rodgers will report,” Fowler said. “Some are hopeful that he’ll show up and others believe that it’s just going to bleed well into August and maybe even Week 1. And so, nobody truly knows what’s going to happen right now except Aaron Rodgers.

“The only clearcut answer we have is that the Packers have made clear, publicly and privately, that they’re not dealing Aaron Rodgers.
