Battaile, Wilson lead Panthers to finale win

Feb. 25—A pair of seniors led the way for the Kentucky Wesleyan men’s basketball team on Senior Night.

Wyatt Battaile scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots, and Jamil Wilson finished with 21 points and four assists to lead the Panthers to an 86-73 win in their season finale Thursday night at the Sportscenter.

According to KWC coach Drew Cooper, his team had to overcome some nerves and excitement to start the contest.

“I thought we had to put Senior Day and the emotion of the day behind us,” he said. “… We had to get that adrenaline out of us. Once we locked in and focused, we chipped away in the first half and actually went into the locker room with a lead.

“We didn’t play perfect basketball, but we played well enough to win on a very special night.”

Panthers looking for second straight win

Nov. 20—The Kentucky Wesleyan College men’s basketball team will look for its second straight victory when the Panthers host East-West University Saturday afternoon.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Sportscenter.

The Panthers (2-1) enter following Tuesday’s 72-48 victory over Midway on Tuesday, and they’re looking to continue that momentum against a relatively unknown opponent.

KWC coach Drew Cooper likened East-West to Midway, which actually led the Panthers 34-33 at halftime before Wesleyan pulled away in the second half.

“They’re similar in terms of athleticism and explosiveness,” Cooper said. “If we don’t guard, then it will be a long afternoon.”

One area where the Panthers got a big lift in their home opener, Cooper added, wasn’t on the floor at all.

Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Kentucky Wesleyan administration set up a new student section — in the Sportscenter’s lower seating area, opposite the opponents’ bench. Cooper hopes it’s

Five Panthers players to watch in their Week 9 showdown against the Patriots

Here’s a look at some key Carolina players to watch.

P.J. Walker

With Darnold (concussion) “extremely limited” at Carolina’s Wednesday practice and even coach Matt Rhule uncertain of his starter’s status, Walker has taken all the Panthers’ first-team reps at quarterback and is preparing as if he’ll start.

Walker was an undrafted free agent and XFL standout, and has shown he isn’t afraid to let it fly.

Walker’s career average yards per attempt (aDoT) of 10.9 is notably higher than Darnold’s lifetime mark of 8.8 yards and 2021 aDoT of 7.9 yards. He’ll likely try to test the Patriots down the field with burners D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson.

That also means Walker is liable to give the Patriots’ defense chances to obtain the football. He has thrown five interceptions against just one touchdown and has almost as many turnover-worthy plays as big-time throws in his career.

Still, the gunslinging

Panthers’ Sam Darnold first QB in NFL history with 5 rushing TDs in his team’s first 4 games of season

Sam Darnold may not be Michael Vick, but the Panthers quarterback has set an NFL record that not even Vick could match. On an 11-yard touchdown run during the first half of Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, Darnold became the first quarterback in league history to rush for five touchdowns during his team’s first four games. Darnold also scored on a one-yard touchdown run earlier in the game.

The former Jets quarterback had five rushing touchdowns during his first three seasons. Darnold entered Sunday’s game with a league-high three touchdown runs. His first rushing touchdown this season came against his former team in Carolina’s Week 1 win over New York. Darnold scored two touchdowns in last Sunday’s 24-9 win over the Texans

Darnold has played an integral role in the Panthers’ 3-0 start. During the Panthers’ first three games, the former No. 3 overall pick completed 68.2% of
