Northeast Conference championship game between Bryant and Wagner delayed after fight breaks out in stands

The Northeast Conference men’s championship game between Bryant and Wagner was significantly delayed during the second half Tuesday night after a large fight broke out in the stands behind the Wagner bench.

The game, at Bryant’s Chace Athletic Center in Smithfield, Rhode Island, came to a standstill for around 30 minutes after the skirmish broke out during a timeout with the Bulldogs leading 68-32 with 4:37 to go.

The fight appeared to be between visiting Wagner fans and Bryant fans. Several Wagner players had to be restrained, but none of them appeared to make it into the stands. Wagner’s Will Martinez tried, though, and was the only player ejected in the incident.

Bryant athletic director Bill Smith grabbed the mic after some order was restored, laying out ground rules for the postgame. He said Wagner players would have to leave the court before fans rushed it.

ESPN will honor Kobe Bryant with a SportsCenter Special on Sunday

Tuesday, Jan. 26, will mark the one-year anniversary of the helicopter crash in Calabasas that killed nine people, including Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. On Sunday, ESPN will dedicate a block of its programming to honoring Bryant, headlined by a one-hour primetime special titled “Kobe – The Legend, The Legacy.”

The SportsCenter Special will features interviews from Pau Gasol, who won two championships with Bryant in Los Angeles; Jerry West, who mentored Bryant in his early years with the Lakers; and WNBA Stars Sue Bird, Geno Auriema, Sabrina Ionescu and Chiney Ogwumike. It will also include narrated features from Los Angeles Sparks legend Lisa Leslie, rapper and longtime Lakers fan Snoop Dogg, and Stephen A. Smith.

Pau Gasol and his wife Catherine McDonell have paid the ultimate tribute to Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

McDonell gave birth to a girl on Sunday. Her name?

Elisabet Gianna Gasol.

Gasol is close with Bryant family

Gasol noted in an announcement that the delivery went well while highlighting the “very meaningful name.”

Gianna was the 13-year-old daughter of Kobe and Vanessa Bryant. She died in the helicopter crash that also claimed Kobe’s life in January.

Gasol played seven seasons with Kobe on the Los Angeles Lakers. He won two championships alongside Kobe and developed a close personal relationship with the Bryant family.
