Spencer Rattler transfer to Arizona State football? ESPN host shoots down ASU speculation

Speculation has surrounded Spencer Rattler and the Arizona State Sun Devils as a possible transfer destination for the Oklahoma quarterback since Rattler was benched as the Sooners starting quarterback.

It reached a boiling point after Rattler announced he was entering the transfer portal earlier this week.

But a tweet from an ESPN College Football host quieted a lot of the speculation surrounding Rattler and ASU as his future home.

Matt Barrie, also an ESPN SportsCenter host and ASU graduate, tweeted out Wednesday that Rattler would not be going to ASU.

He tweeted: “CFB transfer portal news: Spencer Rattler is not transferring to Arizona State.”

His tweet conflicts with other reports that Rattler would end up at Arizona State.

Former ASU player Jordan Simone, also a former football broadcaster for the Sun Devils, tweeted out earlier this week that he was hearing Rattler would transfer to ASU.

He tweeted: “Hearing Spencer Rattler to ASU. Coaches can’t wait on Jayden to make a decision. They need a QB for 2022!”

There has been some speculation that ASU quarterback Jayden Daniels would enter the NFL draft, but his draft stock took a hit this season after completing 186-of-280 attempts for 2,221 yards and 10 touchdowns, with nine passes intercepted.

Daniels indicated on Instagram on Thursday that he would be returning to Arizona State for his senior season.

ASU’s other quarterbacks on the roster are sophomore Ethan Long, freshman Finn Collins, redshirt freshman Nathan Manning, redshirt freshman Daylin McLemore and redshirt sophomore Trenton Bourguet.

None of them have much game experience, so Rattler could have been a fit, should Daniel not have returned to the Sun Devils.

Simone replied to Barrie’s tweet with his thoughts.

He tweeted: “I would love to see Jayden Daniels stay another year and get back to work. He’s so talented and has all the potential to be a top draft choice.”

Simone is evidently getting his wish with Daniels set to return to Tempe.

Earlier this week, speculation linking Rattler, who played at Phoenix Pinnacle High, to the Sun Devils ran rampant.

One called the ASU football team the “most likely future home” for the quarterback, while another wrote that Arizona State was the “most natural fit” for him.

Another listed the Sun Devils as the top landing spot for Rattler.

Those takes are now obsolete with Daniels returning to ASU and Rattler looking for a different school where he can take his talents.
