MLB World Reacts To Yankees’ Crushing Loss On Sunday

The New York Yankees put their fans through the ringer this weekend. What looked like a historic win for the franchise turned into an absolutely crushing loss to their hated rival, the Boston Red Sox.

In the final game of a four-game series at Fenway Park, Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German looked absolutely incredible to start. Through seven innings, he allowed just two base runners, one on a walk in the third, and another reached safely on a passed ball after striking out in the seventh.

German was in striking distance of the second no-hitter of the year for the franchise, and the first Yankees no-hitter against the Red Sox since Dave Righetti in 1983. New York finds itself well back of Boston in the AL East race this year, but a win like that seemed like a possible turning point for the team as it looks to push for a Wild Card spot.

Instead, it all came crashing down in the eighth, which the Yankees entered with a 4-0 lead. Alex Verdugo doubled to start the inning, breaking the no-hitter, and leading the Yankees to pull German for Jonathan Loaisiga. Verdugo scored on a double by Hunter Renfroe, who was knocked in on the next at-bat, with a single by Christian Vázquez. Franchy Cordero singled on the next at bat, followed by an Enrique Hernández RBI double. That cut the Yankees lead to 4-3, before New York could even record an out in the inning.

Kevin Plawecki knocked in the game-tying run against Zach Britton on the next at-bat. Xander Bogaerts plated Hernandez with a sacrifice fly to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead, all in the eighth inning.

Giancarlo Stanton managed a single for the Yankees with two out in the top of the ninth, but New York failed to score, falling 5-4 after seven innings of no-hit ball. It has been a tough year for the fabled franchise, and this loss may just be the worst of 2021 so far, though that list grows every few weeks.

The series was particularly rough for the New York Yankees. Not only did they lose three of four to their biggest rival, but this was the second bad blown game.

On Thursday night, the Yankees led 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, when Chad Green blew the save on a Hernandez two-RBI double to tie the game. New York scored a run in the top of the 10th, but the Red Sox would win in outrageous fashion, with Rafael Devers advancing to third and then scoring on back-to-back wild pitches by Brooks Kriske. He’d wind up walking Bogaerts, who advanced to third after two more wild pitches, and scored on a Renfroe sac-fly to win the game.

The Boston Red Sox are 61-39 on the year after today’s win, one game up on the Tampa Bay Rays, and nine up on the Yankees. Boston is 10-3 in the rivalry so far this season.
