Local middle schooler Ethan Gorny makes ESPN’s Sportscenter Top-10
For most young athletes, going to sleep means dreaming of a day they might appear on Sportscenter’s Top-10.
But for local middle school basketball player Ethan Gorny, on Monday night that dream became a reality.
With the clock ticking down near the end of The Oaks Academy’s middle school basketball game against Orchard, Gorny drove to his right. However, he lost his handle deep on the right wing, and with a defender in his face, tossed a desperate heave to beat the buzzer.
He nailed it — a perfect swish.

Gorny didn’t seem to believe it himself, turning to the crowd with a shocked look on his face and then shrugging before jogging back down the court while the fans erupted in cheers.
The fans weren’t the only ones amazed. That night, Gorny’s buzzer beater was picked up by ESPN, who made it their No. 5 highlight in their famous Sportscenter Top-10 Plays of the Day package, which also included NBA stars Aaron Gordon, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Kyle Lowry, as well as two plays from NFL star quarterback Kyler Murray.
“He did that,” the Sportscenter anchor Michael Eaves said. “Ok Ethan. We see you, but if you see us right now you should go to bed.”
