WJCC Schools, York County School Division on track for fall sports season

Some public schools in the Historic Triangle are gearing up for the fall sports season.

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools and the York County School Division are allowing students to compete in fall sports during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

WJCC Schools announced on Monday the school division is allowing high school athletes to compete in varsity sports.

“The first game of the season will be a football game on February 26,” according to the WJCC Schools’ news release. “This is the week after some high school students return to school for in-person, hybrid learning.”

However, this does not apply to junior varsity or middle school fall sports.

FARMINGTON — After Monday’s lengthy discussion weighing multiple factors in starting up sports, the New Mexico Activities Association Board of Directors voted unanimously to allow the latest sports calendar to get underway on Feb. 22.

The revised calendar was approved with the understanding that the NMAA and schools would have to be flexible with the schedule as the season progresses.

ESPN’s Pedro Gomez Dead at 58

Veteran ESPN SportsCenter reporter Pedro Gomez died suddenly on Sunday. He was 58.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn that our friend and colleague Pedro Gomez has passed away,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. “Pedro was an elite journalist at the highest level and his professional accomplishments are universally recognized. More importantly, Pedro was a kind, dear friend to us all. Our hearts are with Pedro’s family and all who love him at this extraordinarily difficult time.”
