2017 Alabama football team breaks NFL draft record for most picks from one roster

Phidarian Mathis was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft, No. 47 overall, by the Washington Commanders on Friday, and in doing so, helped Alabama football make NFL history.

Mathis became the 39th player taken from Alabama’s 2017 team, breaking a tie with 2001 Miami for most draft picks from one college football team. Entering Friday, both the Hurricanes and the Crimson Tide were tied at 38 apiece.

Alabama entered last year’s draft with 32 selections from the 2017 roster. Former Crimson Tide stars on that roster taken last year include wide receiver DeVonta Smith, quarterback Mac Jones and running back Najee Harris. Alabama was able to tie Miami when long snapper Thomas Fletcher was selected by the Carolina Panthers in last year’s sixth round.

While other players such as tight end Miller Forristall and linebacker Dylan Moses made it in the NFL, they did so as undrafted free agents.

Other former 2017 Alabama players who have been drafted include quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts; running backs Damien Harris and Josh Jacobs; and Pro Bowl defensive backs Trevon Diggs and Minkah Fitzpatrick.
